Softphones or soft phones:
A soft phone or softphone is a software phone used for telephone conversations. While some companies and programmers make the soft phones proprietary many use the SiP protocol, or session initiation protocol.

SIP soft phones:
SIP stands for session initiation protocol. Simply put, if you get a free Internet phone you will be using VOIP because you are talking over the Internet. SIP is the connection that connects you to other phones. Most of this is behind the scenes and requires no intervention on your part. SIP proxies are simple devices. Once a call is connected the end devices can exchange data directly. The proxys do not have to be on the path and they are only involved in the setting (and later the ending) of the session.

Softphones run in the background as long as your computer is online. Softphones allow you to make calls over the Internet from any computer.

Your internet phone number does not need to be in the location in which you live.   We start with an example. You are going on vacation to Hawaii. You have a free net phone number based in New York. Before departing you forward your home phone to your net phone. You also forward your cell phone to your net phone. If you miss any calls while traveling you get them as voicemail on your email. When you get to Hawaii you connect your laptop, and thus your softphone, to the hotel data port. You get your voicemail, and your soft phone connects just like it does from home. You can now call anyone in the world, and you do not pay high hotel surcharges. Incoming calls are free, and you never miss a call.
