IP to IP or VOIP - how Internet calls are made

In the early days most voice over the Internet was from one computer to the other, known as IP to IP. Before the advent of Windows XP, the user would discover their IP address, which is the net address of their computer. ( start - run - winipcfg )

Then they were faced with the problem of telling the other user ( the party they want to talk with ) what their machine IP was, and the transaction was done by email. So Joe finds his IP as 64.36.29.123 (as an example) and sends an email to Bob, who has discovered that his IP is perhaps 4.29.67.233. Bob replies with his addresss, and then both users start their phone software. They also must agree on who will initiate the call.

Try an easy IP to IP program, with a small 50 Kb download. Visit Pico Phone, get a free phone (opens in a new window), and then call your buddy. This program sounds great, and you can send a copy to anyone by email because it is such a small file. It only takes a minute to try this.

Software in those days used different protocols than today's Internet phones. Video was also possible. If you want to see the software, which still works, you may download our Bamba Phone. Bamba Phone will give you a working view of the past. You can still use it to call using IP to IP. By comparisom, Microsoft Netmeeting used the same ideas and the same protocols as Bamba.

When developers agreed upon the SIP protocol, telephone calls over the Internet faced a new era of ideas, such as WiFi, hotspots, portability, and the need to be found anywhere. As such, SIP phones register with a server, and calls are routed to the phone.

Here at All VoIP Search one of our Internet phones runs over our in-house wireless network, to a laptop, where we run the phone software. For call testing, we use Xten's Lite phone, the service from Inphonex, and we call our toll free number, which tests the connection by calling our cell phone. This is the worst possible testing scenario, with latency at the cell tower, the toll free switch, the WiFi router, and the laptop connection. Even so, the clarity is very good.

Send us a request from here if you need a copy of Bamba Phone by IBM, once used in the 1990's. When requesting IBM's Bamba Phone please be specific about what you are requesting, and please tell us what website you are on.
